US FAIL: Scott Bessent Forced to CAVE After China Deal Collapse!
The United States has suffered a dual geopolitical defeat, exposing deep vulnerabilities in its global strategy. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent failed to secure a deal with China during tense negotiations in Stockholm, revealing the collapse of Trump’s trademark pressure tactics. Once effective against smaller economies like Canada and the EU, the strategy faltered against a defiant Beijing. Chinese officials refused rushed terms, offered no concessions, and demonstrated growing confidence in their economic leverage—especially in areas like rare earth minerals, where China controls over 60% of the global supply.
The failure in Stockholm coincides with the breakdown of a $22.8 billion BlackRock-led deal to acquire CK Hutchison’s global ports division, which included 43 ports in 23 countries—most critically, Balboa and Cristóbal near the Panama Canal. The acquisition was originally hailed by Trump as a major geopolitical win against China’s influence. However, Chinese regulators opposed the deal and insisted on including the state-owned shipping giant COSCO. Under pressure, Hutchison missed the exclusive negotiation deadline, and is now reportedly in talks with a Chinese buyer.
Meanwhile, the U.S. remains stuck in a stalled tariff war. While 30% U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods and China’s 10% retaliatory tariffs remain in effect, the fragile pause—initiated in May 2025—is set to expire on August 12. China has offered a 90-day extension, but the U.S. is hesitant, lacking concrete concessions. Talks are stalled over issues like China’s oil trade with Iran and tech sales to Russia.
American companies are feeling the blowback. Major U.S. firms like Apple, Tesla, and Qualcomm have lost Chinese market access. Farmers, especially soybean exporters in the Midwest, have seen exports collapse. Trump's hardline tactics have backfired—harming U.S. businesses, weakening leverage, and allowing China to assert its dominance.
