Today, I’m talking with one of our partners, Tom Manzo, about understanding personal injury law.

When we hear the term #personalinjurylaw, we typically think of motor vehicle accidents, slip-and-fall incidents, and even product liability and exposure cases. These are the cases that people usually see on ads and TV commercials, yet many other types of cases are critical to understanding personal injury law.

Some of the other areas that perhaps aren’t as familiar to people include nursing home work, sexual assault, and victimless crimes, to name only a few. While there are criminal avenues you can pursue with these types of cases, there are also civil avenues that can be pursued.

When it comes to better understanding personal injury law, one of the most practical things you can do is look at your auto policy. So many people fork out a ton of money toward their auto insurance policies, only to find out that they can’t get adequate help from the insurance company after an unfortunate accident. While you can’t have “perfect” insurance, you can certainly pick and choose the areas that are most important to you.

First, look at the #personalinjury protection (PIP) coverage on your auto policy. This is your medical coverage after an accident. Some people elect to have their health insurance as primary, saving them money if they already have great health insurance. However, most people have huge deductibles and large co-pays.

If you have PIP coverage, on the other hand, doctors will bill that coverage and you’ll never have to pay that money back. So, check your auto policy for the $250,000 in PIP coverage. If you don’t have it, find out how much it would cost to add this to your policy.

Next, check for uninsured motorist and under-insured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage. This is the coverage that protects you in the event that the person who causes the accident is driving with little or no insurance coverage. If you file a #lawsuit against that other driver, UM/UIM allows you to recover more compensation. What’s more, it’s one of the cheapest coverages you can have on your policy!
