How to treat splay legs in baby chicks easily and fix their legs to the correct position so they will grow up to be healthy chickens. The spraddle legs will make them appear to be doing the splits. Don't give up on your chick as there is an easy quick remedy. If you are incubating chicken eggs this condition preventable. Use a shelf liner in your incubator, or once moved to brooder a chicks first 24 hours should be spent on towels or paper towels for good traction. Once they get their footing and their muscles and bones strengthen and harden you will no longer need to worry about splay legs occurring. Fluctuations in Brooder temperatures and a difficult late hatch can cause leg deformities. Vitamin deficiency is also a cause, as the vitamin deficient mother can pass on the deficiency through the egg so your flock should be on a healthy diet especially if you're breeding.

VetWrap is our preferred choice as it is self-sticking, wont stick/rip or tug out the baby chicks leg feathers. It also stays securely in place and wont cut off the blood circulation. It is very easy to remove as you will have to keep making adjustments in the space between the legs during the duration of the treatment. Its stretchy enough to allow the chick to have some give to practice walking.

Make sure you keep an eye on your baby chick during treatment, make sure it doesn't get stuck on its back and gets its footing. Be sure that your chick is eating and drinking and not getting trampled in the brooder. You will notice the chick struggle at first to learn to stand. They will quickly master this and hobble around. Later than day adjust the vetwrap so the space between the legs in closer together. Keep making these adjustments until the splay leg is completely corrected.
