The disability community experiences a high rate of sexual assault yet is often excluded from conversations about this issue. This is a prevailing challenge for marginalized communities in general, and one that overwhelmingly results in inadequate services to those who are often most at risk for sexual violence and who face the greatest obstacles to accessing services. Understanding how myths about individuals with disabilities contribute to higher rates of victimization is just the first step in upending the many barriers that the disabled community faces with regards to sexual violence services. This panel addresses ableism, intersectionality, challenges in reporting, and how stigmas around disability contribute to rape culture. Our panelists represent a range of expertise and lived experiences to offer a rich conversation about the need to overturn stereotypes and promote relational and interdependent models of care that promote agency and self-empowerment.
