Pleurisy is a condition whereby the lung lining known as pleura gets inflamed or infected making it swollen and irritated. It’s often associated with fluid accumulation between the two layers of pleura.

Pleura is a two-layered sac that holds the lungs and creates a separation between them and the chest wall, heart and diaphragm. Some of the main symptoms of pleurisy include sharp stabbing pain in the chest when breathing.

The pain is likely to disappear when pressure is applied to the painful area or when holding your breath. However, the pain usually worsens when you cough, sneeze or move. The severity of the condition can range from mild to fatal.

The leading cause of pleurisy includes infectious diseases such as bacteria, virus, fungus and tuberculosis, cancer, collagen vascular diseases such as scleroderma and lupus, gastrointestinal diseases such as pancreatitis or a collection of pus under the diaphragm.
