All About Wire Rope Clips | Which Type to Use & How to Install

Making slings requires swage dies, clamps, and other tools you probably don't have access to out on the job site. So, when you don't have the ability to create a brand new sling in the field, wire rope clips (also known as "cable clamps") are a great second-best option.

When applied properly, most wire rope clamps retain 80%–90% of the wire rope's original tensile (breaking) strength. However, some styles of cable clamps may not be suitable for your application, and proper installation is critical to ensure your impromptu termination is secure and safe.

Regardless of the clip type, workers should not use wire rope clips to make slings for overhead lifting — by ASME standards, only a "qualified person" may design and create a sling in the field when this is the only solution available. In these cases, malleable clips are prohibited.
