Wild You Were Sleeping Episode 6: Meet the Striped Hyena | The Quint

The Deccan Plateau is a vast landscape comprising dry grasslands, savannas, scrublands and rocky outcrops and is home to a wide variety of species. All the species living in grasslands contribute to this ecosystem. A less popular but an equally important species inhabits these grasslands known as ‘The Striped Hyena’ and very little is known about this mammal in India. They can survive in protected natural systems as well as human-modified landscapes. Despite its adaptive nature, their global population is estimated to be less than 10,000 individuals, leading to the IUCN classifying the Striped Hyena as 'Near Threatened'. Conservation of this species requires the protection of their habitats. Effective conservation plan can only exist by knowing the Striped Hyenas better in all aspects of its ecology and behavior.
