What they have become

Portable mortgages have become little more than a nice thing to say. The truth is lending
institutions put so many qualifications on them that you may wind up not being able to take
advantage of your moving house mortgage. In fact, many institutions will wind up rejecting you
for the portable right and treating your application as if it was for your first mortgage ever. If the
building society does not find your new home to be of comparable value to your old you may
wind up having to preserve a higher rate that the price and value of the property does not justify
or, having to take out an additional (and not combined) mortgage to cover the increased cost.
Either way, you are now paying more when you thought you were guaranteed a rate.
