If you skip talking to Shadow earlier in the World of Balance, and thus his introduction scene never occurs, it will play when you recruit him in Kohlingen or even Albrook. As for Duncan's Wife, if you bring Sabin all the way back to South Figaro to see her after the events of Mt. Kolts, you can view a brief scene where Sabin tells her about Duncan's fate.
