With large numbers of salmon in the upper beats of the Thurso River, Eddie McCarthy decided to open the sluice gates on the fish pass, to partially flood the pass and allow the salmon access to Loch More.

During the two hours that the gates were open 340 salmon successfully entered the Loch.

Three days later, after heavy rain, the Loch filled and the fish pass flooded naturally.

The rising river allowed salmon, which have been lying off Holborn Head during the dry summer months, to enter the river system, Loch More and above, to spawn.
