Beavers, The Plants They Chew On, and How Historic Trapping has Skewed our View of Nature

Описание к видео Beavers, The Plants They Chew On, and How Historic Trapping has Skewed our View of Nature

Jen Vanderhoof, Sr. Ecologist, King County
Jen Vanderhoof will begin by covering some basics about beaver biology and ecology and the suite of benefits (ecosystem functions) beaver ponds provide. Then she’ll cover the sorts of plants beavers eat. Finally, she’ll share thoughts on how our idea of “pristine” streams and riparian areas is wrong.

Jen has worked in the Science Section at King County for over 22 years, and during that time her work has often focused on issues related to wildlife and biodiversity. Jen appreciates the intersection of policy and science and the practical application of science, and she brings those interests to bear as lead of King County's Beaver Working Group, which is focused on the coexistence of people and beavers for the benefits of ecosystem health, salmon recovery, and climate change adaptation. Outside of work, she is a Master Birder, long-time local diver, wildlife and underwater photographer, and current President of Beavers Northwest.
