8 Days Camping | Karoo to West Coast

Our last big trip for the year took us up through the Karoo before winding our way down to the West Coast.

Spending the time with family celebrating Hein’s birthday. Exploring new pet-friendly campsites, we stumbled upon hidden gems and intriguing setups, promising return visits in the near future.


Our first day took us straight to the Tankwa Karoo Padstal where we started our journey with a lovely meal and a few drinks. The first night found us at Skoorsteenberg Farm, just before the borders of the Tankwa Karoo National Park, offering a unique stay.

The following day, our journey through the Tankwa Karoo National Park unfolded, a spectacle of nature. Due to our dogs traveling with us, camping within the park was off-limits, leading us to a charming private campsite for the second night—Ymansdam, a personal favourite.

The next day we hit the road for some sight-seeing and driving to our next camp spot over the Gannaga Pass, through quiver tree forests and beautiful views, we made it to our semi-private campsite, Skurweberg. Undoubtedly, this campsite stands out as the most captivating I've ever experienced. The bathroom-shower arrangements were intriguing, and indulging in a bucket shower beneath the starlit sky proved to be an immensely enjoyable and unique experience.

Saying goodbye to the Karoo as we drove to the West Coast through fields of field flowers to spend three nights wild camping next to the rumbling ocean. Despite the challenging seas hindering our fishing plans, the experience was nothing short of amazing

We embarked on the homeward route with a final stopover at Waterval Resort. The night unfolded with a delightful braai under one of the lapas, followed by a brief morning hike to the majestic waterfall. With memories cherished and the road ahead, we reluctantly packed up, closing the chapter on this extraordinary adventure and our last camp trip for 2023.
Eagerly anticipating the multitude of places we might discover in the coming year! The possibilities are endless, and the adventure awaits!
