Zohran Mamdani is a U.S. politician who was elected as the 111th Mayor of New York City, with his term beginning January 1, 2026.
Born in Kampala, Uganda, and raised from the age of 7 in New York City, Mamdani’s background blends immigrant experience, education in Africana Studies, and grassroots organizing.

He previously served in the New York State Assembly representing Astoria, Queens. Mamdani ran on a bold progressive platform: free or fare‐free public buses, a freeze on rent increases in rent-stabilized units, universal childcare, city-owned grocery stores, raising the minimum wage to $30 /hour by 2030, and increased taxation on high-income earners and corporations.
His campaign succeeded in defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary, and won the general election with approximately 50.4% of the vote. Beyond the numbers, his victory marks several historic “firsts” for New York City: the city’s first Muslim mayor, first South Asian-Ugandan mayor, and youngest mayor in generations.
His election is seen as a turning point in urban politics, signalling that progressive, affordability-focused platforms can win in high-cost global cities. At the same time, he faces significant challenges: delivering on ambitious promises, managing budget constraints, gaining broad political coalitions, and responding to public safety and housing crises.

Already, Mamdani has begun assembling his administration, tapping veteran city/state budget official Dean Fuleihan as his First Deputy Mayor and longtime adviser Elle Bisgaard‑Church as his chief of staff.
The work ahead for his new administration is to transform his campaign vision into governance reality — a task that many observers will watch closely, both in New York and across the U.S.
