Nouns - English Parts of Speech

A noun is a person, a place or a thing. That’s a very general definition, but nouns cover a huge range of different words, so we need to have a general definition.

To understand nouns more clearly, we need to divide them into groups. The first division we’ll make are ‘concrete’ nouns, and ‘abstract’ nouns. ‘Concrete nouns’ are things that we can physically touch or interact with, such as ‘a computer’, ‘water’ or ‘a cat’. These are things most people usually easily understand as being nouns. ‘Abstract nouns’ are a little bit more complicated, and require you to have a good imagination, as they are not things we can see, or touch. In fact, I used an example of an ‘abstract noun’ in my previous sentence “imagination”. Imagination is something that we have, but I cannot physically interact or touch someone’s imagination. Some other examples of ‘abstract’ nouns are ‘happiness’, ‘confusion’ or ‘time’.

OK, so we can classify nouns as ‘abstract’ or ‘concrete’, but are there any other ways of classifying nouns? Absolutely! We can separate nouns into ‘countables’ and ‘uncountables.
Basically, the difference is whether or not this item can be easily split into individual units. Some examples of countable nouns include ‘a cup’, ‘a dog’ or ‘a job’. Some examples of uncountable nouns are ‘soup’, ‘air’ and ‘paper’. It is absolutely possible to change uncountable nouns into countable nouns, but we need to pair them with a measure word. A measure word is just a word used to denote an amount or quantity of something. If we want to change the words soup, air and paper into countables, we can use the measure words “a bowl of soup”, “a breath of air”, or “a piece of paper”. Remember, some uncountable nouns can be paired with many different measure words, it just depends on what form it takes.
