The yogini temples are devoted to the worship of the yoginis or female forms of yogis, auspicious goddess-like figures.
It is said that Maa Durga had taken the form of 64 Devis to kill a demon called Rakt Beej. There are 64 yoginis and 4 Bhairavas in the Temple. These are female forms of the Gods, for example, Ganesha is Ganeshi, Varah is Varahi, Kuber is Kuberi etc. The Yogini images depict standing goddesses and are standing on their vahanas. It can be animal forms, birds, reptiles, flowers, water, fire etc.
The Temple is in the circular form and there is open from the top. The main Godess is Durga who is also called Mahamaya. The 60 yoginis are on the wall of the inner circular wall and in the centre is the mandapa which has 4 yoginis and 4 Bhairavas on the walls.
The temple is believed to have been built by Queen Hiradevi of in the 9th century.
