Analysis of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE by Jane Austen, focusing on Mr Wickham’s & Elizabeth Bennet’s conversation about Mr Darcy (in chapter 16 of the novel). How does Mr Wickham manipulate & persuade Elizabeth Bennet into blindly accepting his unfavourable account of Mr Darcy (as well as Mr Darcy’s sister, Georgiana Darcy, & aunt, Lady Catherine de Bourgh)? The video asks what prompts the conversation between Mr Wickham & Lizzy Bennet about Mr Darcy; analyses the techniques that Mr Wickham uses to manipulate Lizzie Bennet; examines how Mr Wickham uses Elizabeth Bennet's own prejudices to exploit her; & considers some discrepancies in Mr Wickham’s account (that should give readers a hint that Mr Wickham might not be as amiable as Elizabeth Bennet believes him to be). The lecture highlights Jane Austen’s brilliant creation of psychological verisimilitude in the construction of her characters in the novel Pride and Prejudice.
