Al McLean Quintet plays Neptune - a Jazz, Period. film

A heady, sold out crowd at Montreal's Diese Onze jazz club took in two blazing sets by tenor man Al McLean. Joined on stage by New Zealand trumpet phenom Lex French, the band let loose on Bob Berg's "Neptune".

The rhythm section includes McLean's regular drummer and bassist Jim Doxas and Adrian Vedady, and the charismatic Taurey Butler joined the band for his first Jazz, Period. recording.

As usual for a Jazz, Period. film, some interesting vintage pieces have found their way into the proceedings; Lex French is playing into an RCA 44-BX ribbon microphone, circa 1945, and Al McLean is being picked up by an incredibly rare 1932 Neumann CMV-3A condenser microphone. The Neumann has been meticulously restored by the German equipment designer Leo Schaal, and has a wonderful and unique sound.
