----------------------------------------------
Dakar Desert Rally is a racing game featuring open world tracks and a variety of vehicles, diverse terrains, and variable weather conditions. The game offers both single-player and multiplayer modes, as well as a career mode where you can evolve your rally raid skills and unlock new events and vehicles as you qualify for the legendary Dakar Rally.
The graphics and effects are stunning, especially the weather effects that can change the visibility and difficulty of the stages. The vehicle selection is impressive, with licensed motorcycles, cars, trucks and buggies all offering different experiences. The damage model and vehicle animations are realistic and detailed, and the sound design is immersive and directional. The game offers a challenge for different skill levels, ranging from arcadey waypoint beacons to navigating purely from the directions of your AI co-pilot. Additionally, there's lots of scope for tuning micromanagement and how you invest valuable resources on repairing the vehicles.
The game however suffers from many major issues that detract from its potential. The tracks, although open and visually beautiful, get repetitive. The co-driver is often late, wrong, or unclear in his instructions, which is a frustrating issue when multiple paths are open to you, or the optimal path is obscured until you're on top of it, potentially throwing away an entire race. Competitor AI also has issues being overly aggressive, and randomly switching between driving flawlessly or randomly turning into solid walls. The more hardcore modes are also locked behind a substantial amount of casual play. Significantly, even with the newest patch, the game can be unstable. Optimization too is poor, and performance can lag or stutter even on a decent machine.
In conclusion, if you can overlook its flaws, it's a lot of fun and manages to strike a decent balance between arcade rally and a simulator. Theres a bit of a learning curve if you're unfamiliar with rally games, but victories really feel like they're earned in this game.
