In July 2009, Socionomics Institute researchers identified a link between social mood and public sentiment regarding recreational drugs. They used this perspective to forecast that marijuana would eventually be legalized in America.

Six years later, Colorado and Washington are raking in revenue from marijuana taxes. A record 58 percent of Americans say cannabis should be legal in the U.S. The New York Times Editorial Board supports the removal of marijuana from Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act. And the legalization of pot has even become a relevant issue in the 2016 presidential race.

In a presentation on October 27, 2015, Socionomics Institute Director Matt Lampert updated the state of the marijuana legalization movement in the United States and considered where it may be headed next.
