Arkansas Natural Stones - Our review and pros and cons of these natural stones

We take an opportunity to play around with stones made in the mountains of Arkansas. Mother nature at its best has provided the sharpening stones. Mortal men have quarried out these stones from the different parts of the state. We take a look at the different densities and qualities that they may have. We're going to compare the results to synthetic stones and just talk about our thoughts and feelings. We've had some great resources. Jonathan Coe has been really great during this process. He's spoken on the phone with us many times and cut some course stones for us. We've used some of the finer grits from a different purveyor. We understand that these different stones have different qualities and it depends on who mines them, as well as who graded them. We got a chance to sharpen four different times with the stones. We sharpen the same steel, super blue. This is an easy steel to sharpen and we already know what to expect on the knife. I always enjoy using something from mother nature. There's a certain romance about using something natural. The results did not come as quickly as they would with artificial stones. I do think I need to give myself some more time to use these stones. Also, people use a variety of lubricants. You need to test the stones for yourself so that you can get a feel for them. Mineral oil tends to be the choice for lubricant. You can use water. Some people use kerosene or a mixture of items. Some use soap and water. The goal is to keep the particles from clogging up the stone. I do think that they are great for refining an edge. Jonathan was very educational, and I definitely think they might shine on different types of steel. We had some frustration. We're used to the stones being more aggressive.
