Dasara Controversy: DK Shivakumar Chooses Silence

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has said he will stay silent and not comment on any subject, asking reporters instead to approach party spokespersons. His comments come after a series of controversies in the state's politics.

The latest row began with the government’s choice of Kannada writer and Booker Prize winner Banu Mushtaq to inaugurate this year’s Dasara festivities. The BJP opposed the move.

In this context, Shivakumar stated that Chamundi Hill is not the exclusive property of Hindus. That comment triggered strong criticism. Mysuru BJP MP and royal family member Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraj Wadiyar called it painful and ridiculous, saying it hurt Hindu sentiments during the time of Gauri and Ganesha festivals.

The BJP has also targeted Shivakumar over another issue, his singing of the RSS anthem inside the Assembly earlier this month. BJP Leaders alleged that he was forced to apologise for it under pressure from Congress MP Rahul Gandhi. On social media, BJP national general secretary B L Santhosh accused the Congress of being against anything linked to nationalism.

Under constant attack, Shivakumar told reporters that people only look to find faults in whatever he says - whether it is politicians, journalists, or others. That, he said, is why it's better to remain silent.
