Hello ladies and gentlemen. I'm Dr. Marc Smith, a 20-year practicing veterinarian and co-creator of PET TAO Holistic Pet Products. Today I'm gonna talk to you about home cooking for your pet and the most frequently asked questions, because everybody's got one. It's really common for when Rover gets sick or Fluffy the kitty has a problem, we all wanna run and feed what's the best. Well, a good idea is to start that before you have a problem, right? Prevention is the best medicine. And the way you can do that is with a good, home-cooked diet.

The first question I want to answer is, how exactly do I need to be in my measurements? And here's the answer. You don't really have to be that exact, but what you need to know is, for a dog, the ratio of the diet is 60% protein, 20% fat, and 20% carbohydrates. 60-20-20. Realize that some fat will come from your protein source, so if you take turkey or you take beef and it's 70-30, then 70% of one pound of beef will be .7 pounds of protein, and .3 will go under your fat column. It's pretty simple, but don't get overwhelmed by that. The big thing you need to know is that 60-20-20 for a dog, protein, carbohydrate, fat. And for a kitty, it's 80-10-10, protein, carbohydrate, fat, and use measurements of weight. Don't use volume. I don't wanna hear anybody say one cup or one milligram. Excuse me, one cup or half a cup. Use weight. That's the only way that you can compare across these macronutrients to make sure you're providing the right nutrition for your pet.
