Modern USB 2.0 ports rely on the xHCI controller (USB 3.x), which replaced the older EHCI standard, making them incompatible with older OSes. Originally, the EHCI protocol, introduced around 2000, managed USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 traffic. However, as technology advanced, the newer xHCI driver, responsible for handling all USB 3.x ports, fully replaced EHCI. In this video, we dive into how to bring USB support to operating systems like Windows 98 and Windows 2000 using PCI-E and PCI to USB adapters.

During the transitional period (socket 1155, 1150, and AM3 motherboards), both EHCI and xHCI were supported. But from Intel’s 6th Gen motherboards onward, all USB traffic—whether it’s USB 3.0, 2.0, or 1.1—is managed exclusively by the xHCI driver. This shift renders older operating systems, such as Windows 98, 2000, XP, and even Vista, incapable of recognizing USB 2.0 ports on modern hardware.

Despite these challenges, we can still bring USB 2.0 and 1.1 support to these legacy systems with the help of dedicated PCI-E or PCI adapters. In this video, we demonstrate how these adapters work, allowing you to extend the functionality of older operating systems on modern setups.
