황악산 기슭에 있는 직지사는 대한불교 조계종 제8교구 본사이다. 신라 눌지왕 2년(418) 아도화상에 의하여 도리사(桃李寺)와 함께 개창되었다. 그 후 선덕여왕 14년(645)에 자장이, 경순왕 4년(930)에는 천묵이 중수하고, 고려 태조 19년(936)에 능여가 왕의 도움을 받아 중건하였다. 임진왜란 때 전소되었으나 광해군 2년(1610)부터 60여 년에 걸쳐 복구하였다. 직지사라는 이름은 황악산을 가리키며 "저곳에도 좋은 절터가 있다"하여 직지라는 이름이 붙여졌다는 설과, 고려 초 능여스님이 절터를 잴 때 자를 쓰지 않고 직접 자기 손으로 측량한 데서 붙여졌다는 설이 있다. 조선시대에 학조가 주지로 있었고, 유정대사가 이 절에서 승려 생활을 시작했다. 대웅전을 비롯하여 1,000구의 아기부처가 나란히 안치된 비로전, 극락전, 응진전, 관음전, 남월료, 명부전, 약사전, 설법전, 만덕전, 조사전, 제하당, 명월료, 청풍료, 사명각, 범종각 등이 현존하는 건물이며, 1,000년 묵은 칡뿌리와 싸리나무 기둥의 일주문, 금강문, 사천왕문 등이 있다. 2002년 주한 외국인 대사들을 초청 전국 최초로 템플스테이를 공식 개최해 명상체험형과 휴식형으로 나누어 운영하고 있다.
Jikjisa Temple, located at the foot of Hwangaksan Mountain, is the headquarters of the 8th district of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. It was founded by Monk Ado in the second year of King Nulji's reign (418) of the Silla Dynasty, along with Dorisa Temple. It was later rebuilt by Jajang in the 14th year of Queen Seondeok's reign (645), Cheonmuk in the 4th year of King Gyeongsun's reign (930), and Neungyeo in the 19th year of King Taejo's reign (936) with royal assistance. Although burned down during the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592-1598), it was restored over a period of 60 years, beginning in the second year of King Gwanghaegun's reign (1610). The name Jikjisa Temple has two theories: one is that it refers to Hwangaksan Mountain, and the other is that it was named after Monk Neungyeo, who measured the temple site with his own hands, rather than using a ruler. During the Joseon Dynasty, Monk Hakjo served as the head priest, and Monk Yujeong began his monastic life at the temple. The existing buildings include Daeungjeon, Birojeon Hall with 1,000 baby Buddhas enshrined in a row, Geungnakjeon Hall, Eungjinjeon Hall, Gwaneumjeon Hall, Namwolryo Hall, Myeongbujeon Hall, Yaksajeon Hall, Seolbeopjeon Hall, Mandeokjeon Hall, Josajeon Hall, Jehadang Hall, Myeongwolryo Hall, Cheongpungryo Hall, Samyeonggak Hall, and Beomjonggak Hall. There are also Iljumun Gate, Geumgangmun Gate, and Sacheonwangmun Gate made of 1,000-year-old kudzu root and broom tree pillars. In 2002, the temple officially hosted the first temple stay program in the country by inviting foreign ambassadors to Korea, and it is operated in two types: meditation experience type and relaxation type.
