I build electric guitars by hand. I am an ENGINEER focused on TECHNOLOGY, but I also love the ARTS and find deep gratification from artistic expression. Being an engineer with a doctorate in mechanical engineering from MIT, I didn’t just build the guitars, I ENGINEERED them. I made solid models and analyzed the predicted vibrational response in order to OPTIMIZE the signal output to produce the BEST sound. I used vibration sensors to measure the structural vibrations and correlate the measurements with my computer models.

But how can I produce the BEST sound if what is deemed best is so subjective and highly dependent on individual human interpretation? Is this a futile goal? Yet some guitars are universally thought to sound GREAT, and some just sound BAD. So which is it – Is there a GOOD sound pattern that can be recognized or is it just going to come down to individual subjectivity? I found that these two apparently conflicting notions can COEXIST, just as technology and art can mutually coexist and complement one another in a wonderful shared space.

I began SHARING my findings by giving presentations at universities. I found that the engineering students became EXCITED by the use of math and science to engineer something as COOL as an electric guitar. In the end, I find inspiring others through my endeavors to be the most rewarding part of my guitar experience. And I have reached the same conclusion in my professional career; it is the HUMAN experience of sharing, mentoring, and making discoveries with my fellow engineers that I find to be the most rewarding aspect of engineering.
