In nature, there are two main species of camels: the one-humped camel and the two-humped camel. Few people know that the ancestors of camels actually originated in North America, a region that once experienced extremely cold winters. A camel’s hump does not store water, as many people believe, but fat. Thanks to their remarkable adaptations, camels can survive for more than a week without drinking water. When they do find water, they are capable of drinking up to 100 liters in a single session.

A camel’s main diet consists of grass and thorny cactus leaves. However, in harsh conditions, they can even eat meat, fish, snakes, and the bones of dead animals. This is a very rare trait for an animal typically classified as a herbivore. Most remarkably, two-humped camels can survive in extreme environments where temperatures range from −40°C in winter to 45°C in summer.
