After 94 years, the first full caste census of independent India is set to take place in 2025, where all castes will be officially counted and recorded. The ruling BJP party has consistently opposed a caste-based census, but due to strong public and political demand—as well as legal pressure from state governments and the courts—Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the caste census on April 30, 2025.

The OBC community sees this as a hopeful opportunity: if their population is found to be more than 50%, they may demand an increase in reservation quotas. On the other hand, the SC/ST communities fear that their existing quotas might be reduced. Many in the General category are also hopeful that the new census data will expose imbalances and lead to fairer opportunities for all.

The last comprehensive caste census was conducted in 1931 during British rule, and many current policies and reservation quotas are still based on that outdated and incomplete data. This new caste census is expected to provide accurate data, helping to revise quotas, inform policymaking and welfare schemes, and improve transparency in governance.
