Описание к видео The Invisible Illness That Doomed an Empress.

In the history books, she often appears as a cold and domineering woman whose disastrous influence led to the fall of an empire. But behind this political portrait lies the story of a woman who fought a lifelong battle with a debilitating illness.

From her youth, the future Empress Alexandra Feodorovna suffered from pains in her legs and back. But after the birth of her hemophiliac son, Alexei, her fragile health completely collapsed. She began to experience severe heart problems that the court doctors could neither properly diagnose nor cure. She suffered from agonizing attacks of tachycardia, shortness of breath, and severe swelling in her legs.

The empress, who had been slender and graceful in her youth, found herself increasingly confined to a wheelchair. This was no exaggeration. During the Romanov Tercentenary celebrations in 1913, one of the most important events of her reign, she often had to use a wheelchair to get around, which shocked the public. Her famous "Mauve Boudoir" in the Alexander Palace was not just a sitting room; it was her sanctuary, her sickroom. She spent her days lying on a chaise lounge, too weak to participate in the exhausting life of the court.

In a desperate search for a cure, she turned to the best doctors in Europe. She traveled to famous spa towns in Germany, like Bad Nauheim, known for its cardiac sanatoriums. She consulted with dozens of specialists who gave her conflicting diagnoses and prescribed questionable treatments, from strict diets to dangerous medications. But nothing helped.

It is in this context that her dependence on Rasputin becomes more understandable. For a woman tormented by her own pain, disillusioned with official medicine, and living in constant fear for her son's life, Rasputin was not just a mystic. He was her last hope. His calming presence and perhaps hypnotic abilities soothed her nerves and, strangely, often coincided with an improvement in her son's condition.

The court and the public saw a lazy and hysterical malingerer. They did not understand the nature of her suffering. Her invisible illness and reliance on a wheelchair became, for them, just more proof of her "unfitness."
