The Beautiful Minds | SWID Bangladesh | Fall 2022

SWID was established in December 1977 by a group of professionals, social workers, and parents of intellectually disabled children. During that period, there was limited awareness in the country about the educability and sociability of individuals with intellectual disabilities, and there were no services available for them. Unfortunately, these individuals were often mischaracterized as idiots and wrongly associated with individuals with mental health issues. In response to this gap, SWID initiated a schooling program specifically designed for intellectually disabled children. In 1982, the Norwegian organization NFPU provided essential financial support not only for SWID's ongoing activities but also offered guidance through a consultant/technical representative to develop new programs and expand activities by establishing branches in different parts of the country. This collaborative effort lasted for 18 years, from 1982 to 2000. NFU further demonstrated its commitment by acquiring land with a building for SWID located at 4 Eskaton Garden, Dhaka.
