Archaeologists in Mexico have discovered 12 sets of ancient Aztec dog remains under a flat in downtown Mexico City that date back some 500 years. Experts believe the find could be the world's oldest canine cemetery. While the exact breed of the dog has not yet been identified, canines were revered by the mysterious civilisation as the guardians of the dead, buried together with humans to guide them to the afterlife. They've also been found under ancient monuments and pyramids which the Aztecs believed would help protect the structures. But this latest discovery has baffled some experts, who believe the world's oldest canine cemetery may have been found. "We've also found some dogs buried with buildings as guardians but in this case we have no evidence of this at the moment," said archaeologist, Lucia Morales. INAH reports that the ancient ceramics used to bury the dogs dates to the years 1350 to 1520 C.E. during the heyday of the Aztec empire. Experts have speculated that the remains could be from the Techichi breed, an ancestor of the modern-day Chihuahua which the Aztecs had kept as pets. Digging will continue at the site as archaeologists seek to find more clues into the exact nature of the ancient Aztec burial site. Report by Lauren Hood.
