After hiking the River Trail at Great Falls Park in Fairfax County, northern Virginia (see previous video), I needed to return to the Visitor Center. Instead of backtracking, I decided to check out the Matildaville Trail and the Potowmack Canal Trail. Both trails were very easy hiking through open forests and passed by the remains of the Potowmack Canal system and the town, Matildaville, that essentially supported the canal operation until its demise. The canal locks and holding ponds are very well preserved and there are informational kiosks along the trail about the history and operation of the locks and canal. The town is less preserved, mainly just a few stone walls and piles of rocks and a few outlines of foundations where buildings once stood. Around the "town" you'll also find a few signs with historical information about the history and economy of Matildaville.
