SherAli Tareen is a Professor of Religious Studies at Franklin & Marshall College and was a Member of the School of Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, during the academic year 2024–25.

His research focuses on Muslim intellectual traditions, Hindu–Muslim relations, and religious debates in South Asian history. His first book, Defending Muhammad in Modernity (University of Notre Dame Press, 2020), won the American Institute of Pakistan Studies Book Prize and was a finalist for the 2021 American Academy of Religion Book Award. It is widely regarded as one of the most reviewed books in Islamic Studies in recent decades.

His second book, Perilous Intimacies: Debating Hindu–Muslim Friendship after Empire (Columbia University Press, 2023), was selected as a finalist for the 2024 American Academy of Religion Book Award and has been featured in major academic forums, including Marginalia Review of Books, ReOrient, and Political Theology.

His forthcoming book, Shah Waliyullah: Aspirations and Tensions of Islamic Cosmopolitanism, will be published in June 2026 as part of Oneworld Publications’ Makers of the Muslim World series.
