Back here on part 2 of Studyball for AJ Brown, what he does well in the last video and his ability to attack inside off the play action and use that big body to punish DBs. We also looked at some of his route running abilities and some of the nuances that he adds to the route tree. To be able to use the inside breaking routes and then using the counter to that: the go routes. On the posts and cross corners that we saw where he leans inside then gets separation to the outside. You saw it time and time again, his ability to get separated from the DB and now he catches it with his big body and a head of steam, he is tough on the back end and he makes those guys want to make business decisions not wanting to hit him over and over again.

Today, we are taking a look at the physicality by which he plays the game. We talked about it after the catch and how it’s tough for these guys to hit him. I want to talk about his route running and physicality that he brings in the route running. We talked about Devonta Smith not necessarily being a physical guy but he can most definitely get down the field, create separation by using his speed. Now you get a complimentary guy in AJ Brown that does things differently than him and has a different skill set. The physicality by which he punishes DBs, he creates the separation by using his hands and using his muscular upper body.

Great receivers increase the margins of error for the quarterback. I have said it in many different ways. Creating separation from a DB, that increases my margin of error. I can be a little late, a bit behind, etc but still get a completion because there’s great separation. The physicality to be able to know my guy is more physical than the guy across from him. You get man to man coverage, my guy is going to win and man handle the DB. Then, the ability to use the big body to shield the football. I had guys like Anquan Boldin, Larry Fitzgerald that were great at that. Where now, open wasn’t even about separation or about the space I saw between the receiver and the DB. It was all about position. Once my guy got into position, if I was accurate with the ball, just put it on his inside shoulder while the DB is on his outside shoulder, no way the defensive back is getting through the receiver to get to the football. AJ Brown, same build and same type of guy that uses that big body to shield the football from the DB, increasing the margin of error. Excited to see how Jalen Hurts and what kind of step he makes in his third year of his progression with a guy like AJ Brown that can increase the margin of error for him. Allow him to be a little later as he works through speeding up the process for himself. This could be a year where they take a huge jump because he gets a guy in there that is a true number 1 wide receiver in all areas of the field so you don’t just have to throw it down the field. Pair AJ Brown along with Devonta Smith who can stretch the field and take the top off the defense that’s going to allow them to do some things with a great 1-2 punch. #AJBrown #KurtWarner #PhiladelphiaEagles
