Dr. Kaiwipunikauikawēkiu "Punihei" Lipe, director of UH Mānoa’s Native Hawaiian Place of Learning Advancement Office and UHM Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation Campus Center, accepted the invitation from Hawaiʻi Sea Grant and the Sea Grant Association to travel to Washington, D.C. in March and deliver the keynote address at the 2024 Annual John A. Knauss Marine Policy Reception on March 6, 2024.

The prestigious event, held at the National Academy of Sciences, was attended by over 350 individuals including delegates from each of the 34 Sea Grant programs, Sea Grant Advisory Board, NOAA National Sea Grant Office, and current and former Knauss Fellows.

The Knauss reception was held to coincide with the Spring 2024 Sea Grant Association (SGA) Meeting which was organized by Dr. Darren T. Lerner, director of Hawai‘i Sea Grant, who is currently serving as president of the SGA. Dr. Lerner’s role as president furthers Hawai'i Sea Grant’s commitment to amplifying Pacific issues and centering Indigenous knowledge and environmental justice to shape impactful policies for coastal communities nationwide.
