Why Birds Sunbathe

Blue Jays like most songbirds will lie flat on the ground and spread out their wings to sunbathe. Here Blue Jay parents introduce their young to their favorite spot. They sunbath to maintain their feather hygiene and general health. They open their beaks and pant to keep from over heating during sunbathing. Sometimes they are mistaken for a sick or injured bird, but After a few minutes in the hot sun they will awaken out of their bliss and usually move to the shade and preen their feathers to remove any dead parasites etc. and spread out protective oils on their feathers.
