Riding a bicycle with training wheels or stablisers allows your child to focus on building confidence while cycling. Teaching a child to ride a bike with stabilisers attached is easier, but understand that, as they get older they’ll have to learn to ride a bike without stabilisers.

If you have a younger child like JoJo, keep them occupied with a scooter or ride-on whilst you focus on teaching your older child to ride a bike for the first time.

10 Tips on how to teach a child to ride a bike for the first time:

TIP 1: Find a quiet, traffic-free safe location such as a flat cycle path at a park. Look out for hazards like pedestrians, dogs, balls and vehicles.

TIP 2: Ensure your child is wearing the right helmet

TIP 3: Boost your child's confidence before they start learning to ride a bike.

TIP 4: Explain how the bike works and that they are in control of the bicycle

TIP 5: Softly hold the child's back with one hand and hold the bike handlebars with the other. Encourage an upright position.

TIP 6: Reduce contact with the child by letting go of the bike and the child once they are confident to start pedalling away

TIP 7: If your child comes off path or crashes or falls of the bicycle, boost their confidence again and remind them of how to use their bicycle brakes and handlebars.

TIP 8: Remind the child to look straight ahead and not look down

TIP 9: Your child will need lots of encouragement and cheering while riding a bike for the first time

TIP 10: Ready, steady, go!!! Measure the distance your child can go on the bicycle without stopping and encourage them to increase this distance each time.
