STORYLINE :

Two people were injured when Catholic and anti-abortion groups clashed with pro-choice groups in Buenos Aires on Friday night.

The anti-abortion groups had gathered outside a conference hall, where Dutch pro-choice campaigner Doctor Rebecca Gompert was giving a speech.

The protesters carried banners reading "No to Abortion" and "Legal or clandestine abortion are both assassins", while other women prayed out loud.

Clashes soon broke out between the anti-abortion groups and pro-choice campaigners, and two men sustained minor injuries when they fell down some stairs.

Despite the disturbances, Gompert was able to give her speech.

Gompert, the founder of pro-choice group "Women Over The Waves", said she hopes to enact legal change in the country and make people aware of the problems caused by illegal abortion.

Gompert doesn't believe there's a need for a law prohibiting abortion, because it doesn't prevent any abortion from happening and only causes unnecessary death for a lot of women.

Her visit to Argentina comes weeks after the Argentinean Health Secretariat declared that 500-thousand abortions are performed illegally every year in the South American country.

The Argentinean law considers abortion legal in cases of rape or mental illness or when the mother's life is in danger.

In the past, all initiatives to legalise abortion have failed because of pressure by the Catholic Church, the prevalent religion in Argentina.
