Visitors to Marina Beach were in shock on Wednesday evening as scores of dead fish washed ashore.
Who is the villan? Pollution from the Adyar River, one of the most polluted rivers in the country.

The Coastal Research Centre and a fishermen activist, explained that these incidents have become more frequent as the Cooum and Adyar rivers have become highly polluted.

During high tides, sea water with higher oxygen content allows fish to enter the river mouth. As the tide recedes, the fish try to return to the sea. However, with the river's pollution, the oxygen levels drop drastically, causing the fish to die. Low tides then carry the dead fish out to sea, and the waves wash them ashore.

It is also said that such incidents were unheard of when the rivers were clean.

Although the dead fish were found near the mouth of the Cooum River, local fishermen believe they came from the Adyar River.
