Описание к видео FITNESS IN THE FIRE SERVICE..

E.V.: John, founder, owner, Fit To Fight Fire I'm honored. Sir, what is your take on fitness in the fire service?

J.S.: Fitness in the fire service. It is the foundation of a prepared firefighter. Everything is built on showing up physically fit. And if you look at day one of the academy, you have no skills. You have no idea what you're going to do, but yet if you show up fit, you've positioned yourself to be successful. You've already demonstrated that you have the discipline and the desire to be a great firefighter when you show up fit. And it, it makes up for a lot early in our careers. We don't have the skillset. We don't have the experience. So we're in these positions to do the job. Our fitness will carry us. And when you fast forward to 10 years on the job, 20 years on the job, you have a skillset, you have the experience and you have fitness. Well, now you've positioned yourself to increase the chances of survival for everybody on the fire ground. So in my opinion, and my belief is you lose the right to be out of shape. The day you become a firefighter, it is irresponsible and unprofessional to get off a fire rig and respond in a deconditioned state. And that's not, that's not personal. That's not a personal attack on anybody. That's professional. And we talk about it all the time. Like I want you to envision, envision you're at the firehouse and you're at the kitchen table and you're with your crew and you get a phone call and that phone call comes from your neighbor and your house is on fire and your neighbor cannot get inside to help your family. There's too much fire and there's no way you could respond because you're miles and miles away from your own home. You're in your own firehouse. And just think about how your heart speeds up and your respiratory rate speeds up and how you feel knowing that your children, your wife, your husband, whoever it is, is inside that house. Now, I want you to imagine what do you want the firefighters in your district that cover your home? How do you want them to move from the fire station through the doors into the bay? How quickly do you want them to dress out? How quickly do you want them to turn out? What do you want them to physically look like? Do you want them to be physically fit firefighters? Do you want them to be highly trained firefighters? Do you want them to have the mindset that when they get on scene, they're going to separate from the rig quickly, grab their tools and go to work and try to rescue and occupy space inside that home to rescue your family? They're on scene now, the airbrake hits. How do they get off that rig? How do they separate? Do they run because we're not supposed to run on the fire ground? Hey, man, this is your family inside. Or do they walk? Do they take a nice Sunday stroll? Do they move to that target, to that door, stretch that line, throw that ladder in a way that makes them look like a professional, like a tactical athlete? Do they go through that window to VES in a way that increases their chances of survival? Now I want you to envision what that firefighter looks like. Put it in your mind. Think about what that firefighter looks like, their fitness level, their skill set, their mindset. That's it, man. That's your standard. That is your standard, because if you want that type of person to show up to your own home, that is what you should be working to be every single day. And I'm not saying I'm that every single day. I'm not saying that, but that is the pursuit to become the firefighter that I want responding to my own home. And the foundation of that man is fitness. You could go to all the conferences, you could take all the classes and you could be a dialed in mentally and skill set type firefighter. But if you don't have the fitness, you are not going to physically be in position to use any of that stuff. So what am I saying here? Be the firefighter you want showing up to your own home and ask yourself, you know, what kind of firefighter do I want going through the window for my children, stretching a line to my front door? And this minimum standard, I get it in the fire academy, you need to meet the minimum standard because you're showing up with no experience, no skill set. But man, once we get past that point, that minimum standard needs to be left behind and we should be going and trying to exceed every single thing we've ever thought we could do so that we could put ourselves in a position, just like we envisioned the firefighter we want responding to our own home. So, man, for me, fitness is the foundation of a prepared firefighter. It shows you're disciplined. It shows you care. It shows you want to be great. It positions you to do your job at a high level. And if you're showing up deconditioned, OK, no big deal. Regroup, recalibrate, reset and get to work. Every single one of us in one instant can make a decision to be somebody different.
