Papillary Muscles and Chorda Tendinea

The papillary muscles are small, nipple-like muscles located in the ventricles of the heart. They attach to the cusps of the atrioventricular valves (mitral and tricuspid valves) via chordae tendineae, which are tough, fibrous strings. When the ventricles contract, the papillary muscles contract as well, tightening the chordae tendineae and preventing the valve cusps from being pushed back into the atria. This mechanism helps maintain the integrity of the valves, ensuring that blood flows in the correct direction and preventing any backflow.
