The company was founded by Rolex-owner Hans Wilsdorf with the goal to offer excellent quality at a more accessible price. For a long time, it was considered the 'poor man's Rolex', but that stigma has definitely been scratched of in the last few decades. Especially the Black Bay has become the poster boy of the new and confident Tudor.

Editor’s note
The watch is discontinued but several retailers still offer the watch. Go to your AD or just ask me, maybe I can find one for you.

Why I chose it
Long story. Until about 2010 Tudor was the poor man’s Rolex. They mainly used ETA movements and the designs were very functional, but they were hardly regarded luxury watches. But then came the years of revival, with introductions like the Black Bay and the Pelagos. Tudor found its new cool.
And that cool had a name… Davide Cerrato. Now a Big Watch bobo at Montblanc, this flamboyant Italian gained watchmaking fame at Tudor between 2006 and 2015.
In that time I visited him in his Geneva offices, and they really felt like they were the young rebels of the Rolex Group.
Tudor introduced the North Flag in 2015 and you can see the Cerrato signatures in it.
Clear, architectural shapes with retro seventies design cues, taken from the Tudor Ranger II.
With the North Flag, he created a completely new watch with a theme he loves and would later also show in his Montblanc collections: outdoor exploration.

(See my review of that Montblanc here:    • Montblanc 1858 Geosphere: a watch tha...   )

So it was a new vision for Tudor – acutely modern and technical.Combined with Cerrato’s incredible Italian sense of style, that led to an avant-garde creation full of paradoxes.
And maybe that’s why the watch was never really understood... This watch doesn’t stick to the rules at all…
