1825 27th September with slide guides
1828 to 1834 fitted with twin return flues
1834 to 1840 with simple return flue
On the opening of the S&D railway the engine had neither an official name or number, it was however known to the crew as Active, the engine had slide bar's to guide the pistons rather than the Freemantle parallel motion fitting to later engines. To improve the performance of the engine Hackworth approached Stephensons to see if they could make a boiler with a main flue and two smaller return flues, this resulted in the loco having two chimneys fitted to the same end as the firebox, Also the two Part Robert Wilson cast wheels were fitted to the sprung axles
