NBDA State of the Industry webinar reinforces our value
The recent National Bicycle Dealers Association hosted a webinar with expert guests, with a lot of time spent talking about what successful retail looks like.
Turns out our company perfectly matches their recommendations.
Speakers were adamant about the need for merchants to have an ecommerce presence.
There were a couple of phrases I liked; “winning retailers will blend the convenience of online shopping with personal engagement only available in person” and “digital and physical work together revenue grows from both ends.”
They also spent time talking about retailers being thoughtful about their stocking plans (lean but sufficient to meet demand and secure inventory with unique products) and leverage supplier fulfillment programs.
They stressed the importance of digital marketing to earn new customers and improve loyalty.
You can find the recording on the NBDA YouTube channel.    • State of the US Bicycle Industry: Insights...

June Platform Sales Results
High single digit growth in June, which is great news but also continues the downward trend from March/April results of over 25% growth, which we speculate were bolstered by consumers buying early to beat higher prices.
Isolating our “typical dealer”, which removes top performers, June online sales were slightly down. I really want clients to accept our offer to work with them on getting their website aligned with best practices and engaged with our marketing services like Google Ads.
Platform traffic was down significantly in June, but conversion rate, average order value, and revenue per session were up. Traffic could be negatively impacted by changing consumer search behavior (see article below) and might not reflect demand as cleanly as it did in the past.
Only a handful of analog bicycle categories showed growth; gravel, full suspension MTB, and BMX.
Electric bikes were up in every category, with unit sales nearly double June 2024.
Helmets and shoes did very well for the month. Helmets are good signals for overall ridership and shoes signal enthusiast riders needing more performance.

April Total IBD Retail Sales Results
PeopleForBikes released total April sales results showing the total IBD sales (in-store and online reported by Circana) was virtually flat with 2024. There’s still concern that both March and April 2025 had significant pull-forward sales due to tariffs uncertainty.
So another month of mixed signals, but some bright spots.
The top line sales results were positively impacted by very strong service department sales, +11% for the month.
Top bicycle categories continue to be throttle assist electric bikes for transit, leisure, mountain, and cargo. Class 3 electric road bikes are showing solid growth too.
Gravel and hardtail mountain bikes showed the best growth in the analog category.
BMX bike unit sales were +8% continuing a promising trend largely influenced by younger riders - suggesting a new generation of cyclists is developing.
Children’s bike unit sales were up slightly overall, but average selling price at bike shops was +11% compared to big box stores (ex: Walmart) at only +6%. This price difference likely contributed to IBD Children’s unit sales being -7% compared to big box +2%. Children’s bikes are largely sourced from China and most impacted by import taxes.
Certain aftermarket categories that signal that people are riding bikes did well in April, in some cases the results were amplified by higher prices; headlights, taillights, patch kits, racks and rack bags, 29” MTB tires, and 20” tubes. But bicycle chains and brake pad sales were down - suggesting that there are fewer add ons on that growing repair business.
