Terrifying Moment 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Southern California

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake has struck Southern California, the biggest tremor to recorded in 20 years.

News anchors Sara Donchey and Juan Fernandez were live on the air for CBS' evening newscast when the quake hit.

It struck at the shallow depth of 0.9km and its epicentre was near the city of Ridgecrest, about 240km north-east of Los Angeles.

Mobile phone footage shows "The Big Apple Coaster" at the New York-New York hotel in Las Vegas shaking with the tremor.

A 6.4-magnitude quake hit the same area on Thursday at a depth of nearly 11km.
