This is a bass guitar cover of Royal Blood's ‘Ten Tonne Skeleton’ performed by Adam Flanagan. This video marks the 1st anniversary since I uploaded ‘Out of the Black’ by Royal Blood, demonstrating the bass/fake guitar tone. The video has since been view over 70k times, which is truly amazing to see so much interest and excitement from those who have commented or liked the video (plus the other ones I’ve uploaded). So a massive thanks to everyone who has watched, liked and subscribed to my channel!

This cover of Ten Tonne Skeleton was one of the hardest to get right for a number of reasons. As you will see, I’ve got the fake guitar sound running the usual POG2/Fuzz/amp sim route, but the performance also features heavy use of the Boss PS-6 Harmonist to achieve the whammy effect (as Mike Kerr does on record).
The pedal is pressed on the offbeats of the bars during the chorus, which is such a mind melt in itself, yet alone to sing the melody at the same time! Take note that the tone is certainly not 100% for the whammy notes neither, with so many parts of the signal chain be responsible for this. The whammy glitches certainly add to the charm (which can be heard on record and in live performances by Royal Blood). This may be down to the choice of bass for this cover, of which I chose to use my Musicman Stingray with 2 band EQ (set up for D standard tuning like the record) However, the most interesting part of all glitches of this I find is the latency issue that appears to happen on the link bars to the middle section/outro section when the whammy is activated. This may be fixed with the PS-6 before the POG potentially but I’ll let someone else find that one out!
Technique wise, this piece certainly demands a lot from string skipping and muting open strings to clean up the performance; a lot more work needed on my behalf! Geek Technical

The signal splits at the Boss tuner, with the mute cutting out the bass whilst the fake guitar sound passes through the bypass jack into the LS-2, which in turn feeds the POG2 at the top of the board, through a Boss PS-6, and into an Electro Harmonix Big Muff Pi. This is the loop for the guitar sound where the output is going straight into Logic Pro with an Orange clean amp emulator put on its channel. My bass sound features another POG2 (which works at the double guitar sound) into the Boss ODB3 (which I realise there isn't a distorted bass sound in the Royal Blood tone but it works for me) and then into the Sansamp Bass Driver DI out into interface. Nothing too crazy (as I don't have all the exact pedals) but this works as a general idea on how to achieve the sound. The bass has a huge impact as well. I’m using a Musicman Stingray with 2 band EQ for a change to see what impact this makes on the tone for this video. It's also worth noting string gauge plays a part in the sound (particularly for the bends) of which I use a fairly heavy set (45-105s), but for D standard tuning (D-G-C-F) it works wonders for intonation purposes.

Bass guitar/fake guitar signal go straight into Logic Pro 10 (which is where the drums have been sequenced and also a clean orange amp model on the guitar signal) and filming was done with a Nikon D3300 on me and a Zoom 3QHD camcorder on the pedalboard.
