If your thoughts are just neurons and synapses, then they are meaningless. Because when you have the thought “the tree is green,” you do assume that your thought has some real connection with the reality out there, that your thought is really “about” the tree. But atoms aren't “about” anything, and neither would any arrangement of atoms be, and neither two would be any argument from a materialist regarding Materialism be.

So even materialists believe that their thoughts are meaningful. But how? Thoughts are meaningful because we can abstract the underlying essence from the particular tree out there, and then entertain that non-material form in the non-material, knowing power of the soul, which we call the mind. So it is the same one essence which is making that to be a tree out there and making me to know it in here.
