Bangladesh's rivers are facing severe pollution due to the discharge of untreated chemical waste from factories. This industrial pollution is a major contributor to the overall water pollution crisis in the country, alongside other sources like urban wastewater, agricultural runoff, and solid waste.
Sources of Industrial Chemical Pollution:
Textile Industry: Dyeing and washing processes in textile factories release a large volume of chemical waste, including heavy metals and dyes, directly into rivers.
Tanneries: The leather processing industry discharges toxic chemicals like chromium into waterways.
Pharmaceuticals, Pulp and Paper, and other industries: These sectors also contribute various chemical pollutants to the river systems.
Lack of Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs): Many industries either do not have ETPs or do not operate them properly due to cost concerns, leading to the direct release of untreated waste.
Ineffective Regulations and Enforcement: Weak enforcement of environmental regulations allows industries to continue polluting without significant consequences.
Impacts of Chemical River Pollution:
Ecological Damage: Chemical pollutants make the river water toxic for aquatic life, leading to a decrease in fish populations and overall biodiversity. The increased Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) due to industrial effluents creates an oxygen crisis for these organisms.
Threat to Human Health: People using this polluted water for drinking, washing, and irrigation are exposed to harmful chemicals, increasing the risk of various diseases. Toxic materials can enter the food chain through contaminated irrigation water, ultimately affecting human health.
Agricultural Impacts: Irrigation with polluted river water contaminates the soil and crops with heavy metals and other toxins.
Economic Losses: Pollution affects fisheries and agriculture, impacting the livelihoods of communities dependent on these sectors. The aesthetic degradation of rivers also affects potential for tourism and recreation.
The Buriganga, Shitalakhya, Turag, and Balu rivers around Dhaka are particularly affected by industrial pollution. The situation is so severe in some cases that these rivers are described as "dying" or "biologically dead."
Addressing this issue requires stricter enforcement of environmental regulations, ensuring all industries have and operate functional ETPs, and promoting sustainable industrial practices.
