Working at the legendary Sam Phillips Recording studio in Memphis, TN, Matt Ross- Spang discusses the drums mono overhead mic he’s using on the incredible Ken Coomer’s (Wilco, Uncle Tupelo, Steve Earle) drums. The mono overhead is one of only three mics he’s got when recording the entire drum kit.

In our latest article, we further explain Matt’s overhead placement technique, discuss the Upton 251 microphone, and provide some tips for how you can go for a more “vintage” drum sound on tracks that may have already been recorded.
