At least 17 arrested at Emory University in Atlanta during pro-Palestine protest

(11ALIVE) A protest encampment was set up Thursday morning at Emory University in Atlanta in support of Palestinians, with the school describing it in a statement as a "trespass" and a heavy law enforcement response that descended on the campus quad.

11Alive crews were at the protest site and witnessed several individuals being detained and loaded into police vans. We are working to confirm the number of people taken into custody.

Atlanta Police confirmed they used "chemical irritants" on the protesters but said they did not deploy rubber bullets, according to a statement on their website.

Emory's statement from University Communications Assistant Vice President Laura Diamond said that the protesters were "not members of our community" and were "attempting to disrupt our university as our students finish classes and prepare for finals."
