Founded in 1999 by Suresh Reddy, Brightcom Group (originally Ybrant Digital) began as a digital marketing company offering online ad services globally. The company expanded rapidly through acquisitions—including Lycos and several international ad-tech firms—positioning itself as a global digital powerhouse. By the late 2010s, it rebranded as Brightcom Group, operating in over 20 countries and catering to top-tier advertisers.

Between 2020 and 2021, as digital stocks surged during the pandemic, Brightcom’s stock skyrocketed—rising from ₹3 to over ₹120. Small investors rushed in, and the company was briefly celebrated as a multibagger. It was even included in key NSE indices, gaining credibility and media attention.

However, behind the scenes, cracks were forming.

In 2023, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) launched an investigation into financial irregularities. It discovered that Brightcom had manipulated its books—particularly with inflated profits, fake bank statements, and improper preferential share allotments. Over ₹800 crore raised from share issues was allegedly diverted to subsidiaries in questionable ways.

SEBI called it a “scheme of fraud” and barred the chairman and CFO from holding directorships. Auditors flagged missing financial data and unverified operations. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) later raided auditor offices, seizing cash and gold.

By mid-2024, the NSE and BSE suspended Brightcom’s trading due to non-compliance—failing to submit financial results. Over 6.5 lakh small investors were left stranded, unable to exit their holdings.

In early 2025, Brightcom claimed it was working on reviving governance and filing overdue reports. But the damage was done—a once-promising tech firm had become a cautionary tale of rapid growth, weak oversight, and financial manipulation.
